The future of Zine World

By cwatson - Posted on 09 January 2010

Zine World

Dear Zine Community,

For years, Zine World has been a cornerstone of the zine trading community, and the principle purchasing resource for SLCPL's collection.  The publication has been an irreplaceable and essential resource for independent publication news, zine library directories, post-office information, opinion, and of course honest and useful reviews of thousands of independent publications.

 Zine World

The content of the publication is so concise, well-presented, and comprehensive, that this humble librarian was humbled over again when he learned that Zine World is coordinated and essentially created by one woman, Jerianne Thompson.  Not surprisingly, Jerianne's life is populated with responsibilities that run far beyond the zine, and she's considering passing the torch along.  Recently she wrote in an email:

"...I am planning to undertake a redesign of Zine World for #29, which I hope
to release no later than June (depending on how the Spring semester goes).
This is my last semester of grad school; I am scheduled to graduate in
May.

Right now, I sort of feel that 2010 will either be the year that Zine
World is reborn, or it will be the last year that it is published. I hope
it is the former, but it's too early for me to say. If it does succeed, it
cannot do so solely on my shoulders; my full-time job and family
obligations are not going to change. If I can't get things back on track
by the end of the year, then I think I will just give up and leave the
work of publishing reviews to whomever wants to take on the task."

I cannot over-emphasize the loss we would all feel if Zine World were to go the way of the Dodo.  If you would like to be involved with keeping Zine World alive and well, please contact me at cwatson@slcpl.org or Jerianne directly at jerianne@undergroundpress.org.
